Anna H-R

is an artist based in Lincoln, NE. She is 27 years old, and is a multi-media artist, though she primarily does illustration. She also writes and draws a webcomic about metal heads.

How would you describe your art?

Somewhere at the intersection of kitschy, grotesque and elegant.

How did you get started making art/how long have you been an artist?

Since I was a kiddo! I ate a lot of crayons as a toddler and art’s been in my system ever since.

What's your favorite thing to create?

Complex illustrations and funny comics!

What influences do you have?

Oh gosh, lots! Junji Ito, Paru Itagaki, Fiona Staples, Mike Mignola, VR Rivera, and Moxie Saturday to name a few!

What's most important to you when you create something?

Right now: finding good references! Whenever I’m in a learning curve with new subject material (in my case currently- instruments) references are super important to me so I can learn what my visual shorthand for that thing is gonna look like!

What's your creative process look like?

It depends! Sometimes I walk into a piece knowing exactly what I want it to look like, and maniacally focus on it until it’s out on paper, or I’ll spend hours doodling around until I stumble on an idea I feel like fleshing out.

What is your chosen charity and why do you support it?

Planned Parenthood of the North Central States. They provide a wealth of important healthcare services (birth control, hormone therapy, STD/STI testing, chest exams, HIV preventatives and abortion, to name a few). This kind of care should be available and accessible to all who need it, and for that reason I want to donate my earnings to them!
